Photo courtesy of High Country Soccer AssociationThe second event in the High Country Triple Crown road race series is the Valle Crucis 7 Miler—also known as “The Cub”—taking place Saturday, September 5, with an 8:00 a.m. start at Valle Crucis Elementary School.
The High Country Triple Crown consists of three events with varying distances and terrain. The first race, the Valle Crucis 15 Miler, was held April 25. The third and final race is The Running of the Knob 5K, which ends in a grueling climb up Howard’s Knob in Boone. All three Triple Crown events are held to raise money for the High Country Soccer Association (HCSA).
Starting at Valle Crucis Elementary School and heading up the hill to Danner Cemetery, the 7 Miler route climbs 785 feet to its highest point before dropping back down to the valley. The route crosses the Watauga River for the second time and finishes back at the school.
Daniel Amick holds the men’s record for the 7 Miler with a time of 40:03.8. Ava Zimmerman hold’s the women’s record with a 48:17.4 finish time.
The preregistration entry fee is $20, with preregistration continuing through Thursday, September 3. Preregister by clicking to www.avalanchetc.org/pages/registration.html. Onsite registration at the race is $30 or $25 for students with ID.
