20th Annual Walk for Awareness at ASU September 8

On Tuesday, September 8, students and community members will meet at 9:00 p.m. on ASU’s Sanford Mall to remember and acknowledge victims of sexual assault, especially two ASU students who were abducted and raped in the late 1980s by the same man—Jeni Gray, who was killed during the assault, and Leigh Cooper Wallace, who survived the attack.

The 20th annual Walk for Awareness begins with a video screening of “Why Walk?—A Survivor’s Story”at 8:00 p.m. in ASU Plemmons Student Union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom, and continues with an organized walk starting at 9:00 p.m. at Sanford Mall. Admission to both events are free and attendees are encouraged to bring candles and/or flashlights for the walk.

The Walk for Awareness began in 1989 following the abduction and murder of ASU employee Gray. The walk serves as a reminder to campus and community members to be aware of their personal safety. It also commemorates lives lost to violence, supports victims and survivors of violence and affirms participants’ commitment and responsibility to speak out against all forms of violence. Participants also learn about campus and community resources that can help in times of crisis.

The program includes a video based on a television interview with the former ASU student who survived abduction by the same man who murdered Gray.

Members of the campus and Watauga County citizens are invited to join the silent walk through campus, which will end at the courtyard adjacent to Rankin Science Complex and Edwin Duncan Hall on the ASU campus.

Student organizations and clubs participating in the walk are encouraged to wear a club T-shirt. Also, no cell phone use or smoking is allowed during the walk.

The Appalachian Parents Association and University Highlands Student Apartments support the Walk for Awareness.
