ASU Fall Visiting Writers Series Begins September 10
Greg Mortenson, Dorothy Allison, Paul Zimmer, Paula Meehan and Frank X. WalkerAn adventurer turned humanitarian, a novelist and three award-winning poets are featured guests of the fall 2009 Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series at ASU.
All events are free of charge and the public is welcome.
The series begins Thursday, September 10, with Greg Mortenson, co-author of Three Cups of Tea. He will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium.
Dorothy Allison, author of the award-winning novel Bastard Out of Carolina, will give a book reading and talk Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Table Rock Room. She also will give a craft talk at 3:30 p.m. in Table Rock Room.
Poet Paul Zimmer will read from his work Thursday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Table Rock Room. A pre-reading reception will be held from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. in the student union’s Multicultural Center. Zimmer will also give a craft talk at 3:30 p.m. in the student union’s Price Lake Room. Zimmer is the Rachel Rivers-Coffey Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing in ASU’s Department of English during the fall semester.
Irish poet Paula Meehan reads from her work Wednesday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. in room 114 of Belk Library and Information Commons. She will give a craft talk from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., also in the library.
Poet Frank X. Walker will give a reading Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Table Rock Room.
The fall 2009 Visiting Writers Series is supported by the Appalachian State University Foundation; ASU’s Offices of Academic Affairs, Multicultural Student Development and Cultural Affairs; the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English, University College, The Center for Appalachian Studies, the Writing Across the Curriculum program, the Sustainable Development Program, the Summer Reading Program, the University Bookstore and Appalachian Journal.

The Visiting Writers Series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank, class of 1968, trustee and generous supporter of ASU.
Parking is free on campus after 5:00 p.m.; however, visitors to ASU should be aware that numerous construction projects on campus as well as activities associated with the academic year have limited visitor parking. The parking deck on Rivers Street provides convenient access to Farthing Auditorium. The parking deck on College Street adjacent to Belk Library and Information Commons provides convenient access to Plemmons Student Union and the library.
