Avery Arts Council Announces New Officers, Grant Opportunities
Regional Artist Project Grant Applications Due September 28

The Board of Directors of the Avery County Arts Council announces a new roster of officers for the organization’s 2009-10 fiscal year: Mary Ray, president; Rebecca Warner, vice president; Kenneth Beam, treasurer; and Christina Shook, secretary.
The new fiscal year also marks the re-opening of two grant lines administered by the Arts Council and awarded to applicants seeking funding for arts and cultural projects—the Grassroots Grants and the Regional Artist Project Grant (RAPG) programs.
Grassroots funds are available to organizations that present arts activities such as community festivals, choral society concerts, community theater productions, art guild exhibitions, arts in education programs in schools, Native American powwow celebrations, classes and workshops, African drumming circles and craft fairs. Grants range in size from $100 to $1,000 and more. A cash match is required. Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the event for which the funds are requested.
The RAPG program awards funds to individuals committed to a project essential to a career in his or her respective art form. Applicants must have a strong record of artistic accomplishment appropriate to the stage of their career, be 18 years of age or older and have been a resident of Avery County as of July 1, 2009. Grant awards range from $400 to $1,200, and a cash match is encouraged but not required. The deadline to submit a proposal for a RAPG project is Monday, September 28, by 5:00 p.m. A workshop on how to write a RAPG proposal will be held on Monday, September 14, at 4:00 p.m. at the Avery Arts Council office in the old Cheese House, located at 630 Shawneehaw Avenue in Banner Elk. Call ahead to RSVP.
Both grant lines are made possible by funds appropriated by the North Carolina legislature and distributed through the North Carolina Arts Council to county arts councils throughout the state.
