Concerts on the Lawn Features Five Bluegrass Bands Friday

Concerts Part of Arts Council Fundraiser

Three generations of musicians combine to form The Sigmon Stringers, performing on the Jones House porch this Friday, September 4, during the Downtown Boone Art Crawl.

This Friday’s weekly Concerts on the Lawn performance coincides with the Watauga Arts Council’s Bluegrass and Barbeque Bonanza fundraiser and features five local bluegrass bands.

Beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Jones House in downtown Boone, featured bands Southern Accent, The Sigmon Stringers, Bluegrass 1101, Diana & Sarvis Ridge and Leftover Bluegrass will take turns on the porch while attendees enjoy food, prizes and great music.

Southern Accent is a bluegrass gospel group with members from Watauga and Avery counties. The band adds a bluegrass flavor to traditional and contemporary gospel songs and performs in local churches and area festivals such as MusicFest ‘n Sugar Grove, the Wayne Henderson Festival and the Grayson Highlands Festival. Southern Accent performed at MerleFest in 2004.

Three generations of bluegrass and gospel musicians will be represented when The Sigmon Stringers take the stage. The Newton-based band originally formed in 1972 and has opened for Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, The Country Gentlemen, Jimmy Martin, Doc Watson and Ralph Stanley.

Bluegrass 1101 is one of five bands performing this Friday, September 4, at the Jones House beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Bluegrass 1101 consists of Danny Campbell on guitar and Brian Hicks on banjo, a duo that formed in 2004 after studying under the great Steve Lewis, a national banjo and guitar champion. With arrangements for guitar and banjo only, they bring a new approach to traditional fiddle tunes and bluegrass standards.

Watauga County-based bluegrass and acoustic band Diana & Sarvis Ridge, led by singer and guitarist Diana Wilcox, performs original songs as well as covers of bluegrass standards. In 2006, Diana & Sarvis Ridge released They’re Just Little Boys, a CD of their favorite songs to perform.

Leftover Bluegrass, located in Boone, plays a mixture of traditional music, bluegrass, gospel and the occasional old-time country song. Band members are Hoyt Combs, Allie Lewis, Larry Horton and Keith Griffin.

Mast General Store, the Downtown Boone Development Association, Alpine Storage and Bandana’s Bar B Que & Grill sponsor the concert.
Bandana’s will serve barbeque pork or smoked chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, banana pudding and iced tea or lemonade. Adult plates are $12, and kids can eat for $6. Food will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Between band performances will be four themed cakewalks. Tickets to each cakewalk are $5 and include five chances to win a prize. The music walk will feature CDs, the art walk will give away original works of art, the restaurant walk will award meal coupons and the dessert walk will feature homemade cakes and other sweet treats.

Attendees can purchase a discount meal and cakewalk ticket that will include dinner and two cakewalk passes for the cakewalks of their choice for $20 per person.

A gallery reception for artists featured in the Watauga Arts Council galleries in September will take place inside the Jones House from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. as part of the Downtown Boone Art Crawl.

Bring a blanket or chair. For more information, call 828-264-1789 or click to the Arts Council’s website at www.watauga-arts.org  and look under “special events.” Advance tickets can be purchased online or by calling the Arts Council.
