Special Olympics at Lees-McRae September 16

Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk will host the Special Olympics on Wednesday, September 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fred I. Dickerson Athletic Complex.
Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., and the opening ceremony and parade of athletes begins at 10:00 a.m. Athletic events, award presentations, lunch and a closing ceremony will follow. In addition, pageant queen Miss Ashebrook of Gastonia will speak with participants.
The event coordinators expect to have about 70 total athletes, including competitors from Cranberry, Yellow Mountain, Avery High and Avery Middle schools, two Head Start programs and 40 young children ages 3 to 5 who participate in the college’s Young Athletes program.
More than 80 volunteers have already signed up to help with the events. Lees-McRae volunteers help with everything from registration to parking to photography to cheering the athletes on.
“This is our second year, but last year got rained out,” said Dani Usedom, director of campus recreation at Lees-McRae. “Everyone’s really excited to participate in it.”
The most popular event is the softball throw, Usedom said, but other events include 25-, 50- and 100-meter walks and runs, a 200- and 400-meter run and the long jump.
