Spruce Pine Pow Wow September 11 to 13
All are invited to attend the 4th annual Spruce Pine Pow Wow in Spruce Pine, held from Friday to Sunday, September 11 to 13. Bring your lawn chairs and stay all day. This is an educational event, so there will be interesting sights and events going on all day, such as dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling, flint knapping, gourd carving, handmade craft vendors, a tee pee, flute and contemporary music.
A raffle with many items valued at about $100 will take place, with the drawing held on Sunday, September 13. You need not be present to win because event staff will call winners to pick up their prizes.
Friday is Kids Day and participation by many schools is expected. Kids will be asked to dance with the head man and head lady. The boys will learn the “stealth of the warrior” and the girls will learn the “grace and dignity” of a traditional lady dancer. Dances such as the Crow Hop, Buffalo Dance and Snake Dance will take place, and even the teachers are asked to dance. When the emcee says “Intertribal,” that includes everyone in attendance.
Native American Music Award Nominee Dave Trezak is the emcee, and he and Miss Vicky Hutto will perform each day. He plays Native American flute and guitar, and both he and Miss Vicky sing native and contemporary music.
The Spruce Pine Pow Wow will be held just south of Spruce Pine on Highway 226 South, behind Music, Jewelry and Loan, located at 12513 Highway 226 South. It is two miles south of Highway 19 East and two miles north of Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 331.
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. On Friday, children with the schools attend for only $1, and activities will start as soon as the children arrive.
Pow wow hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The Blue Ridge Intertribal Pow Wow Association is a nonprofit organization. People are welcome to volunteer to pass out fliers before the event as well as volunteer to help at the pow wow. For more information or to volunteer, call Mabel at 813-765-3073.
