A World Record Attempt To Benefit Education

Daniel Boone would be proud. Even if the American pioneer never wore a coonskin cap, Daniel Boone still would have appreciated the furry nod to his legacy that came in the form of a World Record attempt using hundreds of faux coonskin caps during the 2nd annual Daniel Boone Days Music & Culture Festival last Saturday. The festival attracted approximately 1,250 people to Horn in the West and roughly one quarter of those attendees participated in a World Record attempt for the “Largest Gathering of People Dressed Like Daniel Boone.” The Town of Boone set the World Record last year at the inaugural Daniel Boone Days—the Town of Boone’s official annual festival—with 398 participants, but fell short of that goal during the 2009 event. But it wasn’t all for naught—the attempt raised more than $3,000 for the Watauga Education Foundation. “A new World Record can’t be set every year, but just like training for the Olympics, you have to give it a try,” said Melanie Bullard, executive director for the Watauga Education Foundation. “We still own the World Record here in Boone and no one’s taken that away from us. We feel in due time we will break that record, and we are thrilled to be the recipient of the proceeds thanks to High Country Press and Mountain Fountain Productions.” Bullard also thanked Mast General Store, Sunset Tees, Foscoe Rentals and the actors and administration of Horn in the West for helping sponsor the attempt. Jane Smith, Boone Industries and AnimalGardenShop.com also contributed raffle items to help boost proceeds. Photo by Greg Williams
