Cove Creek Farm Heritage Day

Historic Cove Creek High School, Sugar Grove

On Saturday, September 19, Cove Creek Farm Heritage Day will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Historic Cove Creek High School in Sugar Grove, just eight miles west of Boone. The festival begins with an antique car parade that will escort Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shipley, who will serve as the Grand Marshals. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will then proceed with the opening ceremony and the Color Guard flags’ presentation. A military officer will offer remarks prior to the singing of the national anthem by Darlene Caudill.

Events will feature games, demonstrations, live music, food and craft vendors and activities for the entire family. Barbeque, hamburgers, hot dogs and funnel cakes will be available.

Live music under the tent begins at 11:00 a.m. with Linda Miller & Friends. At noon, Gaining Ground Gospel will sing, and at 1:00 p.m., Edward Wilkie and the Improvs will take the stage. Faultline, which features Cove Creek alumni Nancy Combs Mixon, performs at 2:00 p.m. Gaining Ground returns at 3:00 p.m., and the music concludes at 4:00 p.m. with a traditional Beech Mountain fretless banjo performance by Rick Ward.

On the field, a horseshoe competition begins soon after the opening ceremony. Hit-and-miss engines and a grist mill will be in operation throughout the day. Miniature mules and face painters will be on hand for the children, and Cove Creek t-shirts will be sold at the event.

Other highlights include an organic farm display and Scott Combs’ ‘taters for sale. Anticipated displays include Sqworms, The Bug Man, Sugar Grove Hams and Billy Joe Ward’s Folk Toys. Also, the Boy Scouts will demonstrate the skills they have learned.

The Brown Garage, located across from the community center, will be open to the public this year. It is in the early stages of renovation, and everyone is invited to stop by to chat with Ted McGinnis and Mr. Hicks to learn more information and to share remembrances.

Quilt displays, weavers, crafters and local celebrities, such as Mr. and Mrs. Shipley, will be inside the historic high school, as will Terry Harmon, who will discuss local genealogy.

The silent auction will be open until 3:00 p.m. for bargain hunters and bidders.

Bring a vase with your prettiest flowers to place in the front hallway of the building. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three bouquets.

Spaces are still available for demonstrators, crafters, vendors and other exhibits of mountain traditions. To participate, call 828-297-2200 prior to the afternoon of Thursday, September 17.

Cove Creek Farm Heritage Day will be held rain or shine, and admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.
