Clawson-Burnley Park Nears Completion

Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson and Town of Boone staff persons, including Boone Public Works Facility Maintenance Superintendent Eric Gustaveson (pictured), are busy at work completing the final phases of construction at the town’s new Clawson-Burley Park. The new park is scheduled to be complete in time for a dedication celebration on October 23. The new facility will feature two large picnic pavilions, as well as numerous benches and smaller picnic tables to accommodate individuals and small groups who wish to have a picnic or simply take a break and enjoy the outdoors. The town plans on performing additional landscaping upon completion of all construction activities. In addition to providing the public with a new recreation area, the Clawson-Burnley Park serves a critical environmental function, as the wetland in the park filters the stormwater runoff resulting from the State Farm Road area before it drains into the South Fork of the New River. The stormwater wetland was completed in the spring 2009, and is one of several environmental projects the town has already completed or is undertaking to improve the water quality of the New River. The park is named for current Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson and former Mayor Velma Burnley, who served 16 years in Boone’s top public office. Photo submitted
