Jazz Society Presents Jon Thornton Jazz Group Sunday
Charlotte-area jazz authority Jon Thornton performs at the Blowing Rock Jazz Society’s monthly concert this Sunday, September 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn.
A big name in jazz in the Charlotte area is the featured performer at the September meeting of the Blowing Rock Jazz Society, taking place this Sunday, September 13, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock.
Trumpeter and vocalist Jon Thornton, together with Gary Marcus on piano, Elisa Pruit on bass and Brian Sullivan on drums, form the Jon Thornton Jazz Group.
“He’s a master,” Jazz Society President Fred Germann said about Thornton. “He’s reminiscent of that trumpet player of yester year, who was very well respected as a vocalist and a trumpet player—Chet Baker. He’s been a major influence in jazz in the Southeast here for a long time.”
And the people Thornton surrounds himself with are unbelievable, Germann said, lauding the talents of Sullivan, Pruit and Marcus.
Born in Jacksonville, N.C., Thornton decided on a career in music at the age of 12. By age 16, Thornton had performed with jazz legends Donald Byrd, Herb Ellis, Dizzy Gillespie and Marian McPartland. In addition to Baker, Thornton counts Kenny Wheeler as one of his greatest influences.
Over the course of his career, Thornton has also performed with Joe Williams, Natalie Cole, Buddy Rich, Jaco Pastorius and many others. He resides in Charlotte and serves as principal trumpet player for the Charlotte Civic Orchestra and music director for the Brass Act brass quintet. He also plays with the Charlotte Jazz Orchestra and Latin music group Fuego Lento.
