What’s Up in Downtown Boone?
The Downtown Boone Development Association (DBDA) has been very busy lately and is happy to be working with the Town of Boone as their contracted N.C. Main Street Program agency. I would like to share with you some information about why these Main Street Programs are so important to our town. As stated on the National Main Street website, the Main Street movement has transformed the way communities think about the revitalization and management of their commercial districts. The Main Street Four-Point approach is a common-sense way to address the variety of issues and problems that challenge traditional business districts. Below please find a short description of each of the four Main Street Points.
Organization involves getting everyone working toward the same goal and assembling the appropriate human and financial resources to implement a Main Street revitalization program.
Promotion sells a positive image of the commercial district and encourages consumers and investors to live, work, shop, play and invest in the Main Street district.
Design means getting Main Street into top physical shape, capitalizing on its best assets. An inviting atmosphere, created through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, street furniture, signs, sidewalks, street lights and landscaping, conveys a positive visual message about the commercial district and what it has to offer.
Economic Restructuring strengthens a community’s existing economic assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base.
The DBDA has made significant progress in the last fiscal year 2008-9 within each of these Main Street Points.
And that’s not all—currently, we are in the mist of planning our Annual Meeting scheduled for Monday, September 21. We have a full agenda that includes a presentation on Main Street Programs by Liz Parham, director of the N.C. Main Street Center. If you are interested in being a part of DBDA programs, please attend our public meetings the first Thursday of every month at 9:00 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Watauga County Library.
