A Chinese Menu of Influences
641rpm Presents Low Red Land, Appomattox, Aminal Music at 8:00 p.m. Friday
San Francisco’s Low Red Land, which enjoys a ranking as one of the best bands to play in San Francisco in 2008, play 641rpm in downtown Boone this Friday, September 18.
Mark DeVito’s mother sometimes asks why he and his bandmates in Low Red Land are playing in towns she’s never heard of.
“There are people there,” DeVito will respond.
So the San Francisco-based trio hits the road twice a year for a national tour and then play even more dates on the West Coast.
Their current tour brings Ben Thorne (bass and vocals), Neil Thompson (guitars and vocals) and DeVito (drums) to 641rpm on King Street for an 8:00 p.m. all-ages show this Friday, September 18.
The show also features Chapel Hill’s Aminal and Brooklyn’s Appomattox and costs $5.
“We’re trying to do a more grassroots style of spreading our stuff around,” DeVito said. “We’ve been at it for a few years and we can see growth.”
The thought is to head back to towns where they received a good response within six to nine months, so the music is still fresh in people’s minds.
DeVito said they can see the response, as new fans will sing along to the band’s tunes.
“And we don’t know those people,” he said. “So that’s a cool feeling.”

Chapel Hill’s Aminal Music shares the bill with Low Red Land and Appomattox (pictured) this Friday, September 18, for an 8:00 p.m. show at 641rpm.
The last time Low Red Land played Boone, which was last fall, was on a Sunday night and DeVito said an enthusiastic crowd was there.
He hopes there will be those in the crowd singing tunes off the band’s latest album, “Dog’s Hymns.”
“The people who were there the last time really seemed to dig it,” DeVito said. “So hopefully they’ll let their friends know and spread it around.”
The group has gotten good response from the album, both nationally and in the San Francisco area.
In a “Best of 2008 Music” story, San Francisco Station’s Lynne Angel wrote that the trio is “by far one of the best local live acts and their energy and raw passion transfers nicely into album form.”
Earlier this year, Spin.com listed the group among “unknown groups worth knowing,” writing that the “trio stirs indie rock’s dull roots, layering sounds from a Chinese menu of influences without losing focus.”
DeVito has an easy way to describe the music that Low Red Land plays.
“It’s loud, rock music. It’s not like punk or indie, it’s somewhere in between,” he said.
Their music has thoughtful lyrics rich with imagery and mixes a variety of influences. DeVito said some of the newer songs “sound more poppy and some sound darker and hardcore.”
