Appalachian Women’s Fund Membership Meeting September 22

The Appalachian Women’s Fund (AWF) invites you to its Annual Membership Meeting and Social on Tuesday, September 22, at Bistro Roca in Blowing Rock from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Members are encouraged to bring guests, but the event is open to anyone interested in joining or simply learning more about the independent women’s fund. Patti Turner, AWF president, will announce the grant recipients of the $55,000 raised last June.
“It’s important to tell everyone who contributed to the success of the fundraiser exactly how the grant money is being spent,” Turner said. “Once that is announced, the agencies can get busy funding their programs.”
Given the economic climate of 2009, organizers of the June event anticipated raising less money than the year prior. Fortunately, their predictions were wrong, and the group met their goal of matching the 2008 total. Grants Committee Chair Kathleen Kennedy-Olsen noted that “the AWF did see a rise in the number of grant applications for this cycle. Agencies are being forced to do more with less—less staff, less money and fewer resources overall. Giving this money away is the most rewarding part of what we do.”
Membership Chair Brenda Abrams said her goal is “to increase the membership size of the AWF by being inclusive of anyone who is compelled to help the underserved women and girls in this area. Women bridge the gaps and pick up the pieces when no one else can. We support each other and always need our friends. This will be a great night to forge new friendships and give back to the community at the same time.”
