Celebrate Peace Day Monday
Commemoration at Noon, Parade at 4:00 p.m.
A minute of silence, a meditation and a parade will take place downtown on Monday, September 21, to mark Boone’s annual commemoration of International Peace Day. Peace flags will fly and Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson has signed a proclamation encouraging citizens take part.
Treva McLean from Banner Elk will be singing and leading a peace chant on the lawn of Watauga County Public Library at noon.
Marchers will assemble by 4:00 p.m. at the library, parade along King Street to the Turchin Center and then return to the starting point. A party will follow at Our Daily Bread, where a raffle of items donated by McLean, Green Mother Goods, Elkland Arts Center of Todd, Lady Penny and The Bead Box will take place.
Cindy Ball, a member of Mountain Peacemakers, the organizing group, said that Peace Day is an International event and people everywhere are encouraged to be mindful of its purpose.
“We want to encourage as many people as possible to join in,” she said.
The mayor’s proclamation, which includes a call for a ceasefire in world conflicts, is on display in the library.
