Celebrate Two-Days of Oktoberfest at Sugar Mountain Resort October 10 and 11

Grab your beer stein, put on your lederhosen and head to Sugar Mountain Resort for the 19th annual Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11. Experience beautiful fall foliage, cool, comfortable mountain temperatures and a weekend full of activities from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Be sure to bring the kids because the event features fun for the whole family. Admission and parking are free, and the event takes place rain or shine.

An array of artisans and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00 a.m. each day. A sampling of this year’s country craft fair vendors include: pottery, folk art in glass and wood, custom handcrafted hats, books by local and regional authors, caricatures, handmade wooden cutting boards, quilted items, oil paintings, stained glass, handmade furniture, dolls, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, jewelry, home-made baked goods, jams and jellies, bird feeders and much more. For those interested in becoming a vendor, call 828-898-4521, extension 262, or click to www.skisugar.com/oktoberfest to find a downloadable vendor invitation and vendor reservation form.

Enjoy a panoramic view of the High Country, Southern Virginia and Eastern Tennessee’s fall foliage from the 1.5-mile chairlift ride to Sugar’s 5,300-foot peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift.

The children’s activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep children entertained each day from noon until 4:00 p.m. The children’s activity center includes bounce and play stations, hayrides and a chance to meet Sugar Bear and Sweetie Bear. Cotton candy, popcorn, candy apples, homemade cookies and drinks are also available in the children’s activity center. All ages are welcome to participate.

Shop for the upcoming fall and winter seasons at Sugar Mountain Resort’s Sport Shop located on the first level of the main lodge building. AS a continuation of Sugar’s 40th anniversary celebration, the ski shop will offer 50 percent off all 2009 and older winter apparel and footwear during the two-day Oktoberfest. All accessories including goggles, gloves and hats will be excluded from the 50 percent off sale. New 2010 winter merchandise will also be available at regular retail. Commemorative Oktoberfest and Sugar Mountain Resort 40th Anniversary t-shirts and souvenir items can also be purchased in the sports shop or under the tent on the main celebration deck.

Oktoberfest isn’t complete without the sounds of an Oom Pah Band. From noon until 4:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, the 15-piece Harbour Towne Fest Band guarantees to bring the sounds, dances and enthusiasm of Bavaria to Sugar Mountain.

Bavarian cuisine, including Bratwurst, Knackwurst, sauerkraut and pretzels will be available starting at 11:00 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. To help wash it down, an ample supply of Spaten beer will generously flow each day until 5:00 p.m. Spaten Oktoberfest beer, created in 1872, is the world’s first Oktoberfest beer, brewed for the greatest folk festival in the world, the Oktoberfest. If Bavarian cuisine isn’t your preference; hot dogs, hamburgers, soda, cotton candy, kettle corn, funnel cakes, candy apples, homemade fudge and other festive foods will be on hand.

During the festival, attendees can also take advantage of 25 percent discounts for on-mountain lodging. Lodging details and contact information can be found by clicking to www.skisugar.com/oktoberfest.
