Concerts on the Lawn Ends Friday

Final Show of Season Features Barbershop, The Forget-Me-Nots

The Watauga Arts Council offers a free preview of its annual Barbershop Show this Friday, September 18. One featured group is Finders Keepers, a female quartet.

Your final chance to spread out the blanket, kick off your sandals and enjoy free music on the Jones House lawn comes this Friday, September 18, during the last Concerts of the Lawn performance of the 2009 season.

The season-ending show of the annual Watauga Arts Council summer music series features several barbershop quartet groups and young fiddling trio The Forget-Me-Nots. The concert begins at 5:00 p.m., and admission is free.

The barbershop portion of the Friday evening show will serve as a prelude to the Arts Council’s 28th annual Barbershop Show on Saturday, September 19, at ASU’s Rosen Concert Hall.

Featured performers are Let’s Sing!, a barbershop quartet that recently sang at an international competition in Anaheim, Calif.; Finders Keepers, a female quartet that is a 2009 Sweet Adeline Regional Medalist; and the Triad Harmony Express chorus and quartets from Winston-Salem, who will perform “Live at the Sands!: Barbershop with Sinatra & Friends.”

Tickets to the September 19 show at Rosen Concert Hall are $15 in advance and $18 at the door, but you can see a sampling of the concert at the Jones House on Friday for free.

The Forget-Me-Nots, a trio of young Celtic-, Appalachian- and classical-style fiddlers, helps to close out the 2009 Concerts on the Lawn season this Friday.

The Forget-Me-Nots features young fiddlers Willa Finck, Maura Shawn Scanlin and Ledah Finck with David Finck on backup guitar. The band is classically trained through the Suzuki method and performs Celtic and old-time fiddle tunes and original compositions.

“These remarkable girls have been playing together as long as bands made up of musicians two and three times their ages,” said Mark Freed, folklorist for the Arts Council. “Playing together since they were 2, 3 and 4 years old, Ledah and Willa Finck and Maura Shawn Scanlin have built an incredible musical relationship that is more fine-tuned every year they perform at the concerts.”

High Country Bank is the sponsor of this Friday’s concert. The Arts Council also thanks its season sponsors—Alpine Storage, Mast General Store and the Downtown Boone Development Association.
