Expect Detours Near New Market Center This Weekend
Barely holding to its promise to not close lanes of traffic within three hours of an ASU home football game, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced Tuesday that it will close westbound lanes and restrict access on eastbound lanes of Highway 421 in front of New Market Center between 10:00 p.m. this Saturday, September 26, and 7:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28.
According to NCDOT Assistant Resident Engineer Ed Treadaway, the contractor in charge of the Highway 421 widening project informed NCDOT this week that it plans to install an underground conduit system across Highway 421 in front of Hardee’s this weekend. Motorists coming into Boone on Highways 421 and 194, said Treadaway, will use an unofficial detour—traffic coming into town on Highway 194 will be diverted onto New Market Boulevard and traffic coming into town on Highway 421 will have to turn right onto Highway 194 at Hardee’s and will be diverted onto New Market Boulevard by the United Methodist Church and then back to Highway 421 at the Toyota dealership. All of the eastbound traffic on Highway 421 will be shifted into a single lane somewhere between the Toyota dealership and Hardee’s. The eastbound traffic will still be able to turn left onto Highway 194.
Police officers will be present to help out with traffic control.
“As always, plans can change on relatively short notice with construction, and who knows what the weather is going to do and what effect it might have on their plans,” said Treadaway.
