At one time the top attraction in the state of North Carolina, Beech Mountain’s once-sparkling Land of Oz theme park fell victim to neglect, vandalism and the forces of nature in the years after 1980, when the park closed following a 10-year run.
The Greater Avery Tour de Art is here to stay with two more events planned for 2009. The Tour de Art takes place at 12 participating galleries and studios in the Foscoe, Banner Elk, Linville and greater Avery County areas on the fourth Saturday each month through October.

The wet summer in the High Country has ended, though our rainy fall weather has just begun. Ask any farmer and he or she will tell you that it is better to have a slightly dry summer rather than a wet one
This summer, interest in area farmers’ markets reached new heights. Established markets prospered alongside new markets and, at the height of the summer, residents could access farm fresh produce and meats at a market on every day of the week except Monday.
