JobsNOW Stimulates a Higher Learning in the High Country

Caldwell Community College has chosen to participate in a new initiative set forth by N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue. This new initiative, known as the JobsNOW Program, will help CCC&TI to expand its Nursing Aid I program and develop sustainable training programs for skilled workers.

Caldwell is offering what is called a “Green Associates” program, which offers specialized training in HVAC, plumbing, weatherization and carpentry. The courses cater to fields that are stereotyped as “green collar jobs” and are specifically aimed at the construction trade.

Along with the new programs, students will receive training, such as career counseling and job shadowing, through the Caldwell County JobLink Career Center.

To accompany the skills and resources available to students, each student in the program will earn a Career Readiness Certificate, which is a nationally recognized credential showing employers the readiness and ability to begin work and successful completion of job training programs.

Lastly, each student will be required to complete an Employment Connections course, which will teach students how to search for jobs in the field they have chosen.

Administrators hope that these components of the program will give graduates an edge once they’ve completed the coursework and begin their job search. “We want to show employers the value of this type of training. Through the JobsNOW training initiative, students will be exposed to training in both interpersonal and technical skills necessary to meet the new job requirements of the 21st century,” said Elaine Lockhart, vice president of adult, corporate and continuing education at CCC&TI.

Those interested in the JobsNOW program can contact the Caldwell County JobLink Career Center at CCC&TI at 828-759-4680. For more information on JobsNOW, click to www.jobsnow.nc.gov. For more information on registration and fees, contact Dana Glenn at dglenn@cccti.edu  or call 828-759-4675. Financial assistance is available for eligible students.
