Carlton Gallery Autumn Exhibition Opens Sunday
“Butterfly Dance,” mixed media collage by Toni Carlton
Carlton Gallery’s 27th Autumn Exhibition opens this Sunday, October 4, with an artists’ reception from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served. The special occasion enables visitors to meet the gallery artists, who are always happy to talk about their inspiration and techniques.
The focus of the 27th Autumn Exhibition is figurative and visionary art by artists Warren Dennis, Joe Barthet, Debbie Arnold, Toni Carlton and Kate Worm.
The paintings “Tango Dancer” and “Viola Player” by local artist Barthet are stylistic expressionism, colorful and full of rhythm. He paints with the emotions and beats of music as canvases are rendered in his studio. Visionary artist Arnold describes her paintings as a stream of consciousness method from which inner landscapes emerge. She uses many different techniques—sponges, pallet knives, spattering, collage and imprinting—along with rich color, strong contrast and bold patterns.
Carlton’s most recent work includes calligraphy in different languages, layers of translucent paints, papers, fibers, woven textures, transfer images from her photography, intricate stenciling techniques and the energy of peace and a connection of all our relations. The figurative work of Worm on exhibit projects a spontaneous, fluid quality rendered in watercolor and gouache. Worm’s watercolors exhibit strong contrast and a range of intense colors that convey the intimacy between the viewer and the subject.
Dennis’ paintings with elongated figures and interesting subject matter are always a favorite. His painting titled “The House Painter” reflects an “ordinary person doing an ordinary thing,” which is the theme in most of his paintings.
The gallery also features abstract work by Charlotte Foust, Dina Lowery, Elwin Porter and Andrew Braitman and traditional landscapes by Kevin Beck, Egi Antonaccio, Roy Nichols, Jane Desonier and Peter Paglen.
“The Guardian,” oil on canvas by Warren Dennis
The impressionistic paintings of the late Jim Crompton feature his favorite subject matter—jazz musicians. Jim was a dedicated artist, teacher and kindred spirit whose presence in the art community is missed. His love of painting is evident by his diverse subject matter featuring market scenes, Southwestern horsemen, streetscapes, Native Americans, sailing scenes, local landscapes and portraiture.
The 27th Autumn Exhibition, featuring paintings, jewelry, pottery, mixed media, wood, glass, sculpture and fiber art, runs through Sunday, November 15. The gallery is located 10 miles south of Boone and seven miles north of Linville in the Grandfather Community. Gallery hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
