The High Country Comicon isn’t just about comic books.

The event, which is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, at the National Guard Armory in Boone, includes a contest to find the “biggest geek” in the High Country and photo opportunities with members of a Star Wars reenactment group.

More than 30 dealers will attend the event selling everything from collectible toys, gaming cards, non-sports cards, music memorabilia and, yes, plenty of comic books.

“It’s more of a pop culture event than just comic books,” promoter Scott Nicholson said.

Admission to the event is $2, which includes a free comic book. Children under eight are admitted free. Door prizes will also be offered.

The High Country Comicon is the second comic book show that Nicholson has put on this year. The first, in April, drew more than 200 fans. Nicholson said he hopes for more than 300 this time.

This show’s theme is Star Wars, so the reenactment group will be there, along with chances to buy Star Wars toys and comics.

A table for kids to color their own pictures from comic books will be provided.

Nicholson said he expects eight to 10 comic book artists and creators to be there to talk with fans and sign autographs.

A lot of movies based on comic books have been released recently and there is a high interest in the art form, Nicholson added.

“Comic books are very popular, not just for reading and collecting. They have the side benefit of many going up in value,” Nicholson said. “They withstand the recession.

“They may come and go in popularity, but they’re not a fad like Beanie Babies,” he added. “They are something you can always read.”

The contest to find the High Country’s “biggest geek” will also be a part of the convention. To enter, possible geeks are asked to email 50 words or less to boonecomicon@yahoo.com on why they are the biggest geek. Links to YouTube videos and MySpace or Facebook pages are also accepted as entries, which are due by 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9.

Prizes include multiple comic books signed by artists. You don’t have to be at the Comicon to win, but you must be a resident of Watauga, Avery, Ashe, Caldwell or Wilkes counties to enter the contest.
