Howard’s Knob 5K October 10
Final Event in HCSA’s Triple Crown Starts at Watauga County Public Library
Runners set out to conquer Howard’s Knob last year, embarking on the two-mile uphill run that serves as the final event in the High Country Soccer Association’s Triple Crown race series. This year, the Howard’s Knob run has been changed to a 5K with the addition of a one-mile downtown Boone loop before the two-mile climb. Photo submitted
The final event in the High Country Triple Crown road race series is the Howard’s Knob 5K, which begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, at the Watauga County Public Library.
Preregistration for the Howard’s Knob 5K race is $15 and no student discounts are available. After Wednesday, October 7, participants must pay the onsite registration fee of $25.
The two prior Triple Crown events were the Valle Crucis 15 Miler, held on April 25, and the Valle Crucis 7 Miler, held on September 5. The three Triple Crown events support the High Country Soccer Association (HCSA).
This year’s race up Howard’s Knob differs from the traditional two-mile Howard’s Knob race by opening with a one-mile run through downtown Boone before the strenuous two-mile ascent.
The one-mile loop is “to warm [up runners’] legs before they begin the two-mile climb,” said Darren Mullenix, HCSA president.
Medals will be awarded to first through third places for men and women winners in each age category, which are divided by 10 years, beginning with U-19 and ending with a 70-plus category.
Each person who signed up and completed all three Triple Crown events will receive a special “technical” running shirt, which differs in design from the shirts given out to participants of each event, Mullenix said.
No prizes will be awarded to overall winners of the Triple Crown events this year due to financial constraints, he added.
