Hayes School of Music This Week

The trumpet features prominently in this week’s School of Music lineup, with a trumpet quartet on October 19 and a trumpet jazz duo October 20.

Watauga Community Band Sunday
The Watauga Community Band will play alongside the Raleigh Community Concert Band this Sunday, October 18, at 3:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall for a concert that is free and open to the public.
Ten pieces of music chosen by the different bands will be performed, including Broadway melodies, marches, traditional band arrangements and pieces featuring trumpet solos.
Mid American Trumpet Quartet October 19
Musicians from the Hayes School of Music and others will present a concert this Sunday, October 11, to benefit the annual Appalachian The Mid American Trumpet Quartet performs Monday, October 19, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The quartet is comprised of James Stokes from ASU’s Hayes School of Music, John Schlabach from Ohio University’s School of Music, Alan Siebert from the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music and Charles M. Pagnard from Cedarville University in Ohio.
“We have been performing together in central Ohio for the past nine years,” said Stokes, who joined the faculty at ASU in 2008 after teaching at Capital University in Ohio for 12 years. The quartet plays compositions from the Renaissance to Baroque periods, as well as jazz and contemporary compositions.
“We have been invited as featured artists to perform for the International Trumpet Guild meeting in Sidney, Australia in July,” Stokes said. “This and a series of concert tours have been planned to prepare for that performance.”
Trumpeters Brent Bingham and Matthew Frederick and pianist Bair Shagdaron will join the quartet during the Boone performance.
The musicians will perform “Games,” a new work composed by Scott Meister from the Hayes School of Music. In addition, they will perform a program selected from the following: “Fanfare” by Gottfried Reiche, “Suite for Four Trumpets” by Jack Kimmel, “Canonical Fanfare” by Fisher Tull, “Scarborough Fair” by Simon and Garfunkel, “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” by Benjamin Britten, “Meditation on a Scottish Hymn Tune (Amazing Grace)” arranged by Greg Pascuzzi and “Concert Fanfare” by Eric Ewazen, among other works for trumpet quartet.
Jim Ketch Jazz Duo October 20
The Jim Ketch Jazz Duo will perform in the Recital Hall on Tuesday, October 20, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
