Move Over Kobayashi—There’s A New Competitive Eater in Town

The famous competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi—known for his talent of scarfing down hot dogs at an alarming rate of speed—would have been proud. Two weeks ago, Wolfie’s Deli & Subs, located at 593 West King Street in downtown Boone, hosted a sub eating contest featuring its monster, three-pound sub, the A-Bomb.
Three brave contestants—Chris Hunt (back), Daniel Keegan (middle) and Steve Smith (front)—had 25 minutes to down an A-Bomb. Smith ate one A-Bomb in the first five minutes and then managed to finish a second A-Bomb by the 19-minute mark, securing him the win and explaining the look of exhaustion on his face.
For winning, Smith received a t-shirt, a coupon for a free sub and the honor of having his name and photo displayed on the restaurant’s leaderboard, lovingly referred to as the Wall of Shame. For more info on Wolfie’s, call 828-265-5600. Photos by Bryan McGuire
