Brian Smith pauses for a picture with his wife Jill Smith’s giant pumpkin—which weighs between 360 to 380 pounds and must be lifted into the truck with a tractor—before delivering it to The Best Cellar in Blowing Rock. This marks the second year of displaying a giant pumpkin in front of the restaurant, and the couple will also place a 400-pound pumpkin in front of Brian’s workplace, Blowing Rock Real Estate. Jill is a member of the North Carolina Giant Vegetable Growers and purchases her plant seeds through the club. She will enter a pumpkin, grown at her farm in Meat Camp, in the Mountain City Pumpkin Fest this Saturday, October 17; at last year’s weigh-off, her 425-pound pumpkin earned second place to an 800-pounder. The world record for the largest giant pumpkin, set in 2009, is 1,725 pounds and is held by a farmer in Ohio.
