Hayes School of Music This Week

Free concerts featuring vocalists, woodwinds, tubas, euphoniums and early instruments are on the Hayes School of Music calendar at ASU this week.

Student Voice Recital Friday
Senior music education majors Amber Elise Osborne and Justin Smith will perform a joint voice recital in the Recital Hall this Friday, October 23, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Woodwind Chamber Ensembles October 26
Students in ASU’s Hayes School of Music will present an evening of woodwind chamber music Monday, October 26. The free performance begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.
The program consists of works for clarinet, English horn, oboe and flute. Compositions are the allegro movement from Jacques-Jules Bouffil’s “Premier Trio, op. 7, no. 1,” Beethoven’s Variations on “Là ci darem la mano,” Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock,” Robert Muczynski’s “Duo for Flute and Clarinet, op. 3,” the andante movement from Madeleine Dring’s “Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano” and the first movement from Francis Poulenc’s “Sextet.”
The student musicians are Nathan Adcock, Tracy Bass, Jessica Blackburn, Clayton Edwards, Anna Fitzgerald, Rosa Greeson, Katherine Holley, Andy Hunt, Chris Janowiak, Rebecca Jordan, Amber Kelly, Leonhardt Liachoff, Carlyn Logan, Tara Nixon, Casey Oakes, Alicia Pawlowski and Vanover Waller.
They are coached by Alicia Chapman, Andrea Cheeseman and Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham—all faculty members in the Hayes School of Music. Sierra Askew, Chase Branham and Susan Slingland will provide piano accompaniment.
Octubafest October 27
Tubas provide more than the “oom-pah” in marching bands or the voice of the mother ship in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Octubafest, a concert on Tuesday, October 27, will showcase the musicality of the tuba and euphonium. The free concert begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.
Performing will be the Appalachian Tuba/Euphonium Collective from the Hayes School of Music. Chris Blaha, a faculty member in the school of music, directs the group.
The program features “Renaissance Dances” by Tylman Susato, “Canzona per Sonare No. 3” by Giovanni Gabrieli, “Concert Rondoa” by Himie Voxman, “In the Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg, “Consortium” by John Cheetham, “In a Mellow Tone” by Duke Ellington, “Ricercar del Primo Tuono” by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and “Spoofy” by Rich Matteson.
Collegium Musicum October 28
The Collegium Musicum will perform on Wednesday, October 28, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Founded in 2001, the Collegium Musicum studies and performs music of the 16th through 18th centuries, with the aim of introducing listeners and performers to important issues of historical performance practice for music that is played, danced or sung. Dr. Alicia Chapman directs the group.
The program features “Balleti” by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, “Quartet in G Major” by Telemann, “Aus Liebe” from Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” “Canon in D Major” by Pachelbel and “Overture in D Major” by Telemann.
A Peek Ahead—Halloween Monster Concert October 31
The ASU organ studio and the Boone Chapter of the American Guild of Organists present the 3rd annual Halloween Monster Concert Saturday, October 31, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.
Admission is free, all are welcome and costumes are encouraged.
Featured will be Bach’s famous “Toccata and Fugue in d minor” with special audience participation, a “Pumpkin Carols” sing-along, “Name-That (Scary) Tune” quiz, free candy and more.
