New Boone Flood Maps Take Effect December 3
Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panels created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were presented to the Town of Boone in 2008. The panels, which serve as overlay districts on the town’s zoning map, become effective December 3.
“There will be changes in [the maps]; it just depends on the individual property,” said Jane Shook, a town planner in the Development Services department. “It’s important if anyone has a question or concern about their property to give us a call. They may need to talk to their insurance agent.”
In order to continue participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the town must show evidence of adoption of floodplain management regulations that meet NFIP standards by December 3. The N.C. model Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance was developed by the N.C. Division of Emergency Management and modified to reflect requirements by the Town of Boone.
The Boone Town Council will hold a public hearing on adoption of the North Carolina model Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance on Monday, November 2, at the quarterly public hearing at the Town Council Chambers on Blowing Rock Road. The quarterly public hearing begins at 7:00 p.m.
