Families looking for a unique way to bond should get its running shoes ready and run in the 10th annual Stick Boy Mayview Madness 5K and 1-mile fun run. Both runs will take place on Saturday, November 7, in Blowing Rock.

The 1-mile fun run begins at 8:00 a.m. as participants start at Blowing Rock School and run a loop through downtown Blowing Rock before returning to the school.

The 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) race begins at 8:30 a.m. in the same location and leads runners through downtown, into the Mayview neighborhood and finishes at the Memorial Park downtown.

Runners who want to register early and save $5 must do so by Saturday, October 31. Pre-registration costs $20. Forms can be downloaded at the race’s website by clicking to www.highcountryconservancy.org/

or picked up at Stick Boy Bread Company, located on Blowing Rock Road across from the entrance to ASU in Boone. Runners who pre-register are guaranteed a race T-shirt.

There has already been a few runners register for the run, but High Country Conservancy, which helps put on the race, is hoping for more.

“Each year the number of entries goes up a little bit,” said the Conservancy’s Maeve Gould. “We’ve had a decent turn out but we hope to get more.”

She said the hope is to have more than 150 participants.

Adding the fun run to this year’s race should help that. Gould said that Stick Boy Bakery Owner Carson Coatney suggested the fun run.

While there have been youngsters running the 5K in the past, this could generate more young runners to the event.

“It’s cool to make it an event for the whole family,” Gould said.

The race began in 2000, with the idea coming from Brenda Moretz Speckman, a native of the area. The fundraiser is to help protect the mountains, which runners will catch glimpses of from different vantage points in the race.

The race’s name comes from the Mayview Manor hotel, which closed in 1966 and was demolished in 1978. The race goes by the spot where the hotel once stood.

Awards will be given to the top three males and top three females overall and prizes will also be given to the top three finishers in each age group.

For more information on the event and/or to register, contact the High Country Conservancy at 828-264-2511, by email at maeve@highcountryconservancy.org or by clicking to www.highcountryconservancy.org/mayviewmadness.php.
