Sugar Mountain Village Council Election

Four Candidates Vie for Two Open Seats Carrying Four-Year Terms

Four candidates are in the race for two open seats on the Sugar Mountain Village Council. Both seats carry four-year terms. Early voting is already underway and voting on Election Day—Tuesday, November 3—takes place at Sugar Mountain Village Hall, located at 251 Dick Trundy Lane, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Candidates for the 2009 election include two incumbents, Council Member William “Bill” Schmitt and Council Member Louise Anderson, and two new contenders, Marjory C. Unrath and Norris V. Clifton.

The two candidates that receive the most votes by November 3 will join the five-person council, which includes Mayor Dennis Lacy, Mayor Pro Tem Gunther Jochl and Council Member Nancy Crawford. The terms of Lacy, Jochl and Crawford expire in December 2011; the terms of whoever is elected to fill the two open seats will expire in December 2013.

High Country Press asked each of the four candidates to identify the top three issues they believe are facing Sugar Mountain Village in the coming term.

Candidate Unrath replied that she (1) “wants to maintain a peaceful mountain ambiance and make sure that Sugar Mountain Village is and remains environmentally sound,” (2) “wants to ensure the safety and security of residents and guests of Sugar Mountain Village,” and (3) “wants sound fiscal management for any actions that the Village of Sugar Mountain may take.”

Incumbent candidate Anderson replied that she believes that (1) replacing the entire, 36-year-old irrigation system on the golf course is a top issue, in addition to (2) working toward creating a unified identity for the Village of Sugar Mountain and (3) creating a cohesive relationship between the taxpayers, businesses, town and guests.

Incumbent candidate Schmitt replied that he (1) “will not rezone any property or tracts of land now zoned for single-family homes to a higher density,” (2) “wants sensible and reasonable growth that respects the mountain environment,” and (3) “wants fairness and courtesy for all residents and homeowners who live and own in Sugar Mountain Village.”

Candidate Clifton replied that he has “no agenda going in” to the election and that he wants “to work with the council to do what is best for the village.” Clifton added, “I support progress, I have time, I have community working knowledge and I would like to share/work for the betterment of the Village of Sugar Mountain.”
