The ASU Visiting Writer Series presents Irish poet and playwright Paula Meehan, who will read from her work on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. in room 114 of the Belk Library and Information Commons.
Meehan will give a craft talk titled “Private Sources, Public Speech—Making it Up from Scratch” earlier in the day in the same location, from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Paula Meehan was raised in two working-class districts of Dublin and graduated from Trinity College and Eastern Washington University.
She has written plays for children and adults and has conducted writing workshops with inner city communities, in prisons and at universities.
Meehan’s work is much translated and widely anthologized, such as in Carcanet Press Poetry Publishers’ 2003 volume Three Irish Poets: Eavan Boland, Paula Meehan, Mary O’Malley.
Meehan has won prizes such as The Martin Toonder Award, the Butler Literary Award and the Denis Devlin Award.
Her books of poetry include Return and No Blame, Reading the Sky, The Man Who Was Marked by Winter, Pillow Talk, Dharmakaya, Mysteries of the Home: A Selection of Poems and Painting Rain.
Meehan’s plays include Mrs. Sweeney and Cell: a play.
