The show, titled “Nothing Serious,” includes five vignettes, taken from Rich Orloff’s 10 comedy sketches published in a work of the same name.
“We’ll have dances interspersed between the vignettes,” said Marianne Adams, professor and chairperson of the ASU Department of Theatre and Dance.
The showcase will last a little less than two hours, and its purpose is to “help bring the freshmen into the department,” Adams said, adding that it is difficult for freshmen to be cast for roles in shows when competing against more experienced upperclassmen, so the showcase provides an opportunity for them to be involved in the department.
“It is only open to freshmen students,” Adams said. “It should be a fun evening; it’s to showcase students’ performing abilities and dancing abilities when they come into the university.”
About 40 students will participate in the performance, including 18 theatre students and 16 dance students, she added.
“I’ve been working with the dance students,” Adams said, adding that she choreographed two dances and her colleagues Susan Lutz and Rebecca Quin each choreographed one dance.
Trimella Chaney, an adjunct theatre faculty member, will direct the vignettes.
Additionally, the production crew will be comprised solely of freshmen who are interested in technical theatre, and they will be in charge of the lighting, props and stage management, Adams said.
“We think there’s a really talented group of students coming in,” Adams said, adding that all of those performing have indicated interest in the Department of Theatre and Dance.
The freshman showcase has been held for more than 12 years, and this is the third year ASU has offered a dance major, so more students come into the dance program each year, Adams said.
Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available through the Valborg Box Office, which is open Monday to Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., by calling 828-262-3063 or by clicking to www.theatre.appstate.edu/performances.
Interested persons should buy tickets in advance because the show will sell out; the venue only has 80 seats, Adams said.
Proceeds benefit the Department of Theatre and Dance.
I.G. Greer Studio Theatre is located in the lower level of I.G. Greer Hall, on the building’s east side. The door faces the B.B. Doughtery Administration Building. Parking is available for free on campus after 5:00 p.m.
