Blooming Young Artist Has Artwork Displayed

Charlie Lecka, a 12-year-old Avery Middle School seventh grader, smiles by his first publicly displayed piece of artwork—three sunflowers titled “Evening Bloom”—which was installed by Boone Town Hall a few weeks ago and will be on display until August 2010. Lecka is the youngest artist (by more than a decade) to have art selected for display by the Downtown Boone Development Association’s Public Art Committee, said Mary Ella Baker, assistant director of the DBDA and administrator for the Public Art Committee. Lecka, who has been welding since age eight, learned the trade in his father’s shop, Avery Machine and Welding, in Newland. Lecka explained that to make this piece, he cut the metal sections out, laid them out on a table and welded them together—a process that took about four or five days. “He has made sunflowers like that since he was nine,” said Lecka’s father, Steve Lecka. Those interested in purchasing this piece or other artwork by Lecka should call the DBDA at 828-262-4532. Photo by Corinne Saunders
