Hayes School of Music This Week

Support The Hunger and Health Coalition by attending the Faculty Recital Series concert on Tuesday, November 3. This week’s active performance schedule also includes concerts by the Appalachian Flute Ensemble, organ studio, music students and Jazz Ensemble I.

Appalachian Flute Ensemble Thursday
The Appalachian Flute Ensemble will perform this Thursday, October 29, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The ensemble will perform Melvin Lauf Jr.’s “Jubilant Synergy” and “Winter Ride,” Catherine McMichael’s “Rose Garden” from “A Gaelic Offering,” Mozart’s “Andante in C Major” arranged by S. Ben Meir, Jennifer Higdon’s “Mountain Songs” and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier’s “Concerto, Op. 15, No. 3 in D Major.”
Dr. Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, a member of the Hayes School of Music Faculty, directs the 22-member ensemble.
Student Percussion and Euphonium Recital Friday
Senior music education major Taryn Wooten and Brent Hill will perform a percussion and euphonium recital this Friday, October 30, in Rosen Concert Hall at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Halloween Monster Concert Saturday
The ASU organ studio and the Boone Chapter of the American Guild of Organists present the 3rd annual Halloween Monster Concert this Saturday, October 31, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.
Admission is free, all are welcome and costumes are encouraged.
Featured will be Bach’s famous “Toccata and Fugue in d minor” with special audience participation, a “Pumpkin Carols” sing-along, “Name That (Scary) Tune” quiz, free candy and more.

Student Voice Recital Sunday
Senior music education majors Jenica Thompson and Joel King will perform a joint voice recital in the Recital Hall this Sunday, November 1, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Faculty Recital Series Presents ‘Songs of Travel’ November 3
Music can feed the soul and the hungry at a recital on Tuesday, November 3, when the Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Recital Series performance will benefit The Hunger and Health Coalition.
The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Donations for The Hunger and Health Coalition will be accepted at the door.
The program features works by British composer Ralph Vaughn Williams performed by tenor Randall Outland, pianist Rodney Reynerson and violist Eric Koontz, all faculty in the School of Music.
The program features Williams’ “Songs of Travel” based on poems by Robert Louis Stevenson and “Four Hymns,” a collection of songs based on works by Robert Bridges, Richard Crashaw, Jeremy Taylor and Isaac Watts.
Outland has appeared in leading roles in major opera houses in Europe, Israel and Canada. He also has performed with the New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, Charlotte, Knoxville and Chattanooga operas.
Reynerson, formerly a member of the Indiana State University music faculty, joined ASU’s faculty in 1980, where he serves as the coordinator of keyboard activities. Reynerson has performed solo literature, chamber music and piano concerti throughout the eastern United States.
Koontz led the viola sections of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra before returning to the United States to pursue studies toward a doctorate in musical arts at UNC-Greensboro.
The Hunger and Health Coalition works to ease poverty and hunger for families and individuals who are experiencing economic hardship and food shortages. This assistance may include food, medicine and referrals to other community resources. The Hunger and Health Coalition meets emergency needs while acting as a community resource assisting those in need to find a more permanent solution.
Jazz Ensemble I November 4
The works of well-known composers and arrangers of big band music will be performed Wednesday, November 4, by ASU’s Jazz Ensemble I. The free concert begins at 8:00 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium.
Directed by Todd Wright from the Hayes School of Music, the 19-member student ensemble will perform from the following: “Magic Flea” by Sammy Nestico, “Burbank Sackbut Brigade” by Roger Meyers, “Nutville” by Horace Silver, “To You” by Thad Jones, “Come Candela” by Mongo Santamaria, “La Fiesta” by Chick Corea, “I Remember Bird” by Leonard Feather and “El Caborojeno” by Bob Mintzer.
