Sugar Mountain Celebrates 40 Years
First official celebration is scheduled for December 11 to 13

Sugar Mountain Resort, Inc. celebrates 40 years this season, and will feature events and specials throughout the winter sports season.
Sugar Mountain Resort opened in 1969 with four lifts and 11 ski slopes. Today, it boasts seven lifts and 20 slopes for skiers and snowboarders, and additionally offers snowshoeing, tubing and ice skating.
During the summer, 2,500 feet of snowmaking pipes—which carry air and water up the mountain to make snow—that are located along the Big Birch slope were replaced and upsized, said Kim Jochl, director of marketing for Sugar Mountain Resort.
“This will allow for more efficient snowmaking abilities,” Jochl said.
Sugar also purchased an additional, energy-efficient snowmaking machine for the upcoming season.
The manual ticket-checking system has been replaced this year with an electronic scanning system, which, according to a press release, is designed to make the entire winter experience friendlier and easier for customers while providing the ability to maintain more accurate control of the lift and slope tickets on the mountain at any given time.
Additional components of the scanning system can be purchased in the future to offer better customer service at all the sales points of the operation, which include retail sales and equipment rentals, Jochl said.
Sugar will host events and specials throughout the season, with one of the upcoming highlights as the Turkey Treat, which allows customers to ski or ride any one session on each of the four days of the Thanksgiving weekend, from Thursday to Sunday, November 26 to 29, for just $109. The Turkey Treat must be purchased by Sunday, November 22.
The first official celebration for the 40th anniversary will take place during Sugarfest, which is scheduled for December 11 to 13.
Diann Roffe, two-time Olympian who was the 1994 Olympic gold medalist and 1992 Olympic silver medalist, will return to Sugar to guest coach during the 16th annual Adult Pre-Season Ski Clinic, which takes place the same weekend as Sugarfest.
