ASU Hosts 8th Annual Entrepreneur Summit Friday

People interested in owning their own business can learn from the experts at the 8th annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit this Friday, November 6, at ASU.

Multiple concurrent sessions run at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. in the Walker College of Business in Raley Hall. A keynote speech by Matthew Szulik, chairman of Red Hat and the 2008 Ernst and Young National Entrepreneur of the Year, will begin at 11:00 a.m. in Valborg Theatre located adjacent to Raley Hall in Chapel Wilson Hall.

The entrepreneur summit is named for Carole Moore McLeod in recognition of her gift that provides ongoing support of the program. She is a 1981 business graduate of the Walker College of Business. “There is nothing more exciting to experience the students’ creativity and feel their desire to start a new business,” she said.

Szulik joined Red Hat in 1998 as chief operating officer, and served as president and CEO from 1999 to 2008. He has been chairman of Red Hat’s Board of Directors since 2002 and a director since 1999.

Szulik shared a similar vision with Red Hat founder Bob Young that the collaborative approach of open source and a great brand could redistribute the economics of the technology industry from vendor to customer. Szulik has been instrumental in fostering this vision, which has led to Red Hat’s success as a profitable public open source software company with one of the world’s most recognized technology brands. Red Hat employs 2,500 individuals in more than 58 offices worldwide. The company is headquartered in Raleigh.

In addition to Szulik, more than 50 business owners from across the eastern United States will discuss topics related to entrepreneurship, including e-commerce, adventure sports, critical success factors for entrepreneurs, green industries, international business, building a brand and women in entrepreneurship.

Companies participating in the event include 3tailer LLC, Abundant Life Resources Inc., American Emergency Vehicles, Blue Ridge Energy Works, Boone Brewing Company, Centdev Properties, Farmers Fresh Market, Footsloggers, Global Shippers Association, Grandfather Mountain, Greenlight Brand Agents, Moore-McLeod LLC, North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development, Red Hat, Underdown & Associates Inc., Wachovia - A Wells Fargo Company, Waste Consultants and Yellow Dog Entertainment LLC.

Housed in the Walker College of Business, the Center for Entrepreneurship was created in 2006 to support faculty, student and regional interest in entrepreneurship. More than 1,000 Walker College of Business alumni are active entrepreneurs. In addition, more than 500 students enroll in entrepreneur courses in the business college each year.
