Endowment Helps Library Again

Watauga Library Endowment Chair Shelby Lane (middle) and Endowment Treasurer Jack James (right) presented a check for $2,610 to Watauga County Library Adult Services Librarian Evelyn Johnson (left) on Tuesday, October 27, on behalf of the Watauga Library Endowment. The gift will be used to help in areas particularly hard hit by this year’s cutbacks in state funding. The money will be used to supply children and adult books and audio-visual materials at the main library and juvenile collection materials at the Western Watauga Branch in Sugar Grove.
“We wish we could do more but the Endowment has had to reduce its gift this year in order to protect its investment base until the economy recovers,” said James. “Last year, we gave the library $6,000 that was used for a Gates Foundation matching grant for computers.”
Endowment gifts to the library come from the investment earnings on donations made to the Endowment by individuals. A tax-deductible contribution of $1,000 to the Endowment results in a gift of about $40 to the library every year forever, according to Johnson.
