The newest addition to West King Street, Glug, and The Looking Glass Gallery in downtown Boone will host a grand opening celebration during Art Crawl this Friday, November 6.

The Looking Glass Gallery has been closed for remodeling off and on since May because of flooding.

“It was the rainiest May in record,” Lane Worrell, an employee at the gallery, said.

Since then, the employees struggled with keeping the gallery open and had the intention of moving. “We wanted to stay,” Otto, a manager of the gallery, said. The owner, Danen Johnson, closed the gallery and began remodeling, adding a new concrete floor, a new roof, and a new French drain to avoid further flooding.

Now, the gallery is open and looking better than ever.

“We’re glad to be back.” Otto said.

The gallery has added new jewelry, rocks and gems to their collection of local art, as well as custom framing.

The owner of the gallery, Johnson, is also the co-owner along with Chris Hensley of the new beverage shop on West King Street, Glug. The store houses 120 varieties of wine and an array of craft and domestic beer. The custom-picked selection of beer and wine is high quality, coming from small family breweries and labels, and also inexpensive.

“I picked things I thought I would like, and I’ve definitely had all the beers,” Johnson said.

The store also features local food such as jams, jellies, hot sauces, goat cheeses and frozen foods from local restaurants. The greatest challenge for the partners opening the store was “jumping through all the little hoops, for sure,” Johnson said, “but it’s been smooth so far.”

Look for monthly specials at Glug coming soon. Glug is now open noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays, noon to midnight Tuesday through Wednesday, noon to 2:00 a.m. Thursdays through Saturday and closed on Mondays.

The two businesses will celebrate their grand openings during Art Crawl this Friday, November 6. The Looking Glass Gallery will have wine for their patrons and Glug will have a wine tasting starting at 6:00 p.m. Local musician Brian Swanson will perform at 7:00 p.m. on the sidewalk between the store and the gallery.
