Hayes School of Music This Week

An especially diverse array of sounds will fill the Hayes School of Music’s Broyhill Music Center in the coming week—from percussion and voice to bassoon and brass.

Appalachian Percussion Ensemble Thursday
The Appalachian Percussion Ensemble will perform this Thursday, November 5, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The Percussion Ensemble includes approximately 18 percussionists. The ensemble performs newly composed and standard works representing a variety of styles, including contemporary, fusion, Latin, pop, ragtime and performance art. Dr. Rob Falvo is the director.
University Singers and Chamber Singers Friday
The University Singers and Chamber Singers will perform this Friday, November 6, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The program is titled “Questions, Anyone” and features compositions with questions as their title or within their lyrics.
Stephen M. Hopkins directs the singers. Hollie Lacy provides the piano accompaniment. The Appalachian Brass and Percussion Ensemble, conducted by James Stokes, also will accompany the singers on select compositions.
“Questions abound in this program,” Hopkins said. “Every piece has at least one question in it, some have several. For some pieces, the questions are the central idea. For others, they are just part of the ‘conversation.’”
The program includes “What If I Never Speed?” by John Dowland, “Who is Crying?” arranged by Mack Wilberg, “Oh, Dear! What Can the Matter Be?” by Gail Kubik and “Where Go The Boats?” by Dan Forrest.
Other works on the program are “I’m Seventeen Come Sunday” arranged by Percy Grainger, “My Spirit Sang All Day” by Gerald Finzi “Dan-u-el” by Kirke Mechem and “The Lamb” by John Chorbajian.
Student Voice Recital Sunday
Lauren Hayworth, a graduate performance student in the Hayes School of Music, will perform a voice recital this Sunday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Blazing Bassoons Sunday
Blazing Bassoons, a 10-member student ensemble, will perform this Sunday, November 8, at 4:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The ensemble will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s “Concerto in C,” Haydn’s “London Trio No. 3,” Prokofiev’s “Humorous Scherzo” and Bill Douglas’s “Celtic Spirit.”
The musicians also will perform Gordon Jacob’s “Prelude, Fugue and Scherzo” and John Philip Sousa’s “The Thunderer.” Dr. Jon Beebe directs the ensemble.
Appalachian Brass Choir November 10
The Appalachian Brass Choir will perform Tuesday, November 10, with the organ and brass faculty at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The brass choir will perform Bach’s “Koum, Susser Tod,” Traci Mendel’s “Summer Twilight On the Mountain,” Giovanni Gabrieli’s “Sonata Octavi Toni” and Rogers and Hart’s “Where or When.”
Works for brass and organ will be featured during the second half of the program. Compositions are “Grand Choeur Dialogue” composed by organist Eugene Gigout, “Pavan-Almand” and “Ayre” written by Charles Matthew Locke, a composer for King Charles, and “Cortege” by Gaston Litaize, a 20th century French composer and organist.
