Hayes School of Music This Week

This week’s concert calendar features a guest cellist, the men’s glee club, the Jazz Ensemble II, music for saxophone and strings and several student showcases.

Jazz Ensemble II Thursday
This Thursday, November 12, at 8:00 p.m., the Jazz Ensemble II will perform in Rosen Concert Hall. Rod Berry is the conductor. Admission is free.
Cellist JW Turner Friday
Cellist JW Turner will perform this Friday, November 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Turner is an assistant professor of music theory at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU).
The program is comprised of works for solo cello: William Pfaff’s “Elegy,” Matthew Gold’s “Meditation on a Handel Aria,” Bruce Mahin’s “Waves of Amber” and Klaus G. Roy’s “Serenade for Cello Solo, Op. 62.”
Turner has pursued careers in teaching and performance, serving on the faculties of Whitman College, Guilford College, Greensboro College and UNC-Pembroke.
He is a frequent guest of the New Horizonsconcert series at Radford University, has performed at conferences for the College Music Society and the Southeast Composers League and showcases chamber music of regional composers as the artistic director of the WSSU concert series, New Music Revelations.
Appalachian Glee Club Friday
Works for male singers are featured during the Friday, November 13, performance of the Appalachian Glee Club. The free performance begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall.
Jason Thompson directs the 51-member group. Rodney Ward and Ann Miles provide piano accompaniment.
The group will sing Aaron Copland’s “Zion Walls” arranged by Glen Kopenen, “Oh, How Can I Keep From Singing” by Robert A. Harris and arranged by David Lohman, Noah F. Ryder’s “Love Song,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” by William Steffe and arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky, “Rainbow ‘Roun My Shoulder” arranged by Robert DeCormier and “Behold Man” by Ron Nelson.
The vocal ensemble What’s Yer Pleasure will perform “Africa” and “Fare Thee Well Love.” The program concludes with the traditional performance of “Brothers, Sing On!”
Student Voice Recital Sunday
Senior music education major Ashley DeCelle and senior music therapy major Shannon Brown will present a voice recital in the Recital Hall this Sunday, November 15, at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Student Saxophone and Clarinet Recital Sunday
Senior music education majors Lee Loftin and Jennifer Helfst will perform a saxophone and clarinet recital this Sunday, November 15, at 4:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Saxophone Concert Sunday
Classical and contemporary works for saxophone will be featured during a performance this Sunday, November 15, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The program includes Jean-Baptiste Singelée’s “Allegro de Concert,” the Welsh lullaby “Suo Gan,” Bart Howard’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” and “Shepherd’s Hey,” Arcangelo Corelli’s “Sonata da chiesa, Op 3, No. 2” and Ronald L. Caravan’s “Jubilate!”
Scott Kallestad directs the musicians.
Student Bass Recital November 16
Senior music performance major Zach Sprau presents a bass recital on Monday, November 16, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
String Chamber Music November 17
Student string musicians in the Hayes School of Music will perform chamber works for string ensembles on Tuesday, November 17, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
Nancy Bargerstock, Eric Koontz and Kenneth Lurie coach the musicians.
The program includes Hummel’s “String Trio,” the allegro from Mozart’s “String Quintet No. 4 in G minor K. 516,” Beethoven’s “Duo: For Two Eyeglasses Obligato,” the allegro from Beethoven’s “Quartet in F minor, op. 95” and two movements from Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Quintet for Piano and Strings.”
Jazz Combos November 18
A concert of jazz combos will take place Wednesday, November 18, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
