The skate and snow shop will host a grand opening celebration this Thursday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Dragonfly Theater and Pub. Photo by Drew Stanley Remember the anticipation for the school bell to ring signaling recess? That’s the reminiscence John Paul Pardy chose to use in naming his new snow and skateboard shop, celebrating its grand opening this Thursday, November 12, at Dragonfly Theater and Pub, located on Boone Heights Drive in Boone.
“Recess says to me it’s time to play,” Pardy said.
It’s more than apparent when talking with the new entrepreneur that he believes that boarding is more than just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. And according to him, he has designed his new shop located at 1158 Highway 105 to offer everything an aficionado or beginner needs to assume the shredding role.
Pardy said that he chose the location next to Peabody’s because it doesn’t feel like a shopping center, has character, is on the way to the slopes and has a parking lot large enough for rails and boxes, which he puts out providing a mini park for kids to ride and play upon. He bemoaned the closing of the county skatepark saying that he wanted to provide a place for kids to go and not get hassled.
“I want to provide a non-intimidating environment to shop in,” he said. “A place where kids can come and get product knowledge and everything they need to make an informed purchase.”
He said that the shop specializes in niche products from top of the line brands, such as Forum, Rome, Libtech, Capita, Coal, Union, Neff, Circa, Dakine, Krew, Supra, Dvs, Matix, Lakai, Airblaster, DC, 32, Special Blend, Emerica, Oakley and Dragon. He also said that his prices are competitive.
Matching his enthusiasm for the board sports are Pardy’s two managers, Ashley Beamer and Billy Ash. They both communicated their desire to support Pardy’s recess philosophy.
Pardy has been in the board retail business for years and first came to Boone in 2002 as an ASU student where he met and roomed with Drew Stanley of Appalachian Terrain Park. Their friendship has endured, which is witnessed by their joint plans for the upcoming winter season at Appalachian Ski Mountain. Recess will sponsor 13 events at the mountain this season including taking over the Shred for the Cup Series, Fresh Fridays, Ladies Park Night and the opening weekend Rome Prejib on Sunday, November 22, if Mother Nature allows. Pardy enjoys stoking the crowd at events with his microphone antics.
Recess also sponsors a riding team, the Shradicals, composed of professional riders Chase Weaver, Austin Leonard, Gus Gordon and Cameron Pierce.
If you wish to get in on the fun, it begins this Thursday, November 12, at the Dragonfly Theater and Pub at 7:30 p.m. There is a $3 cover charge. The Grand Opening celebration opens with the showing of The Airblaster Movie Forever Forum and a locally produced video, Here to There by Maggie Valley’s Jake Sutton. At 10:30 p.m., House of Fools, a rock and roll band from Greensboro, will take the stage.
Lucky partygoers may win raffle prizes that include gloves, t-shirts, DVDs, a snowboard and a night season pass to Appalachian Ski Mountain.
Recess will also celebrate its opening with in-store specials from this Thursday, November 12, through this Sunday, November 15.
