Turkey Trot 5K at Lees-McRae November 21
Runners of all ages and experience levels take part in last year’s Turkey Trot 5K at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk.Lees-McRae College Campus Recreation will host the annual Turkey Trot 5K, taking place this year on Saturday, November 21, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lees-McRae College Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The 5K (3.1-mile) racecourse travels along both paved road and trails. Anyone is welcome to participate regardless of age or experience. The winner of the race will receive a Thanksgiving turkey. The entry fee is $10 if you preregister and $20 on the day of the race.
“I think that this year’s Turkey Trot will be the best year yet,” said Danielle Usedom, director of Campus Recreation. “We have already had several people calling in to sign up and many more are still to come. We have had runners of all ages and experience levels participate in this race.”
Usedom said the Turkey Trot coincides with opening day at Ski Beech.
“We hope to get some extra out-of-towners that may also enjoy skiing to check out the 5K as well,” she said.
This year, all funds raised during the race will be donated to the Alonzo Clark Memorial Scholarship Fund. Alonzo Clark passed away several weeks ago after sustaining severe brain injuries.
“Alonzo was a Campus Recreation employee and a track athlete, and we think the Turkey Trot is a perfect fundraiser for the scholarship fund,” Usedom said. “Alonzo loved to run, and we hope that we can get other passionate runner to join in on the Turkey Trot and to remember Alonzo Clark as we create another opportunity for a college runner to come to Lees-McRae College.”
Participants in this year’s race include 13-year-old Michael Holland, winner of the A Cool 5 run held in Beech Mountain this summer, and Jesse Smith, a visually impaired local runner who runs with his son Nathan.
