The play is based on the movie of the same title and closely follows the beloved story’s original screenplay, based on the book by L. Frank Baum. The movie, produced in 1939, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.
The Wilkes Playmakers celebrate 20 years in January, and this show marks the third time the group has performed The Wizard of Oz, which has been requested repeatedly by audiences.
The cast of about 50 people will portray the timeless tale, and the backdrop, painted by local artist Lynn Underwood years ago, will set the stage again for this show, said Rita Smith, administrative assistant for the Playmakers.
A special Wednesday, November 11, performance was held to benefit Underwood, who was diagnosed with lung cancer, Smith said.
“People just like it,” Smith said of The Wizard of Oz. “Karen [Reynolds, director] says she’ll be in the grocery store and people will be saying how much they like it and asking when is she going to do it again.”
The last time the Playmakers performed The Wizard of Oz was about eight years ago, Smith said.
Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the performance, one hour prior to each performance on a first-come, first-serve basis.
To order tickets by phone, call 336-838-7529 and leave a message with your name, number, the date you want to attend and the number of tickets you would like to purchase. A representative will get back to you as soon as possible.
