Both committees are particularly interested in promoting local business, and for the chamber, “this is an ongoing effort on our part to encourage people to shop local,” he said.
A bumper sticker that reads, “Shop Local: Closer is Better,” is available free of charge at the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 208 Howard Street in Boone.
The chamber also mailed the 1,370 email addresses on its email list to encourage people to download a logo form of the sticker, print it and display it “somewhere conspicuous,” Meyer said.
The Shop Local sticker and logo do not bear any reference to the chamber, and Meyer said the chamber is not “proprietary about it,” but completely focused on encouraging locals to shop in the area before they buy products online or in another city.
“Anything you can do closer to home, closer to Boone, is better for the economy, environment [and] everything,” Meyer said.
Shopping locally cuts down on the usage of fuel, wear and tear on the roads, travel time and all around benefits both consumers and local businesses, Meyer explained.
“It’s also a reminder to local businesses to keep competitive prices, so people keep looking here first,” he said.
Especially around the holidays, this is critical for local retailers, Meyer said.
The chamber has recently begun publicizing its effort through local newspapers and radio broadcasts, Meyer said.
“Shop Local” will be an ongoing effort of the chamber to encourage conservation-mindedness when shopping, he added.
