Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock is hosting its annual Festival of Lights display beginning Friday, November 27, and ending on January 31, 2010.
Chetola has been providing the public with the beautiful scenery and holiday atmosphere every year at this time since 1989. This year, the display consists of 50,000 lights set up on the resort’s 87 acres of property. The public is invited to tour the display free of charge.

“Everyone is invited with no charge to take a drive through the resort and enjoy the setup. We have interactive scenes as well as simple strings of lights displayed around the lake in front of the resort, along the fences and throughout the property. One of the most popular scenes at the resort is a reindeer which lights up in stages to look like he’s fishing in our lake,” said Zachary Linkins, concierge at Chetola Resort.

During the first weekend—Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28—Chetola will offer carriage rides and photographs to be taken through the course of the display from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Carriage rides will travel around Chetola Lake to the front entrance of the resort and back. While waiting for their carriage to arrive, visitors are encouraged to enjoy complimentary hot apple cider and house baked cookies. Rides are priced at $15 for adults and $8 for children age 12 and under. Photographs cost $11.

Other activities offered opening weekend are pictures with Santa, costing $11, which will be set up in the lobby of the Manor House from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., and cookie decorating from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The light display will last through Christmas and New Year’s Eve in time for Blowing Rock’s three day celebration, Winterfest, at the end of January.

“This is a big weekend for Blowing Rock because along with celebrating the last weekend of the Lights Festival at our resort, we will also host other events such the Polar Plunge in Chetola Lake,” said Linkins. Other activities to enjoy during Blowing Rock’s Winterfest are: downtown hayrides, the Chili Challenge, a wine auction, the Ice Carving Competition and Bonfires in the Park.

To complete the day at the Chetola Resort, visitors are welcome to enjoy a meal at the Manor House Restaurant and Pub, or can experience spa treatments and relaxation at Chetola’s new luxury Spa.
