Hayes School of Music This Week

Highlights of this week’s concert calendar include the finals of the prestigious concerto-aria competition, a performance of works by student composers and the Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Trombone Recital Thursday
Chris Cloud will perform a trombone recital this Thursday, November 19, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Amahl and the Night Visitors Thursday to Sunday

Vocalists from the Hayes School of Music will perform the English opera Amahl and the Night Visitors this Thursday through Sunday, November 19 to 22.

The ASU Opera will perform the classic Christmas tradition Amahl and the Night Visitors this Thursday, November 19, through Sunday, November 22. The performances will take place in Rosen Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $12 and $6 for students and can be purchased by calling 828-262-3020.

The English opera, written by Gian Carlo Menotti, is about the misfortunes of a mother and her crippled son, Amahl, and how their lives are altered by a visit from three kings in search of an infant savior.


Student Clarinet Recital Thursday
Casey Oakes, a senior music education major, will present a recital on the clarinet this Thursday, November 19, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.


Cellist Grace Anderson Friday
Grace Anderson will present a cello recital this Friday, November 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Anderson is founder and artistic director of the Triad Chamber Music Society, which brings performers to the N.C. Piedmont Triad. She also maintains an active teaching studio and directs the Young Performers’ Chamber Music Workshop.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a master’s degree from the Juilliard School and a doctorate from UNC-Greensboro. She was a protégée of Fred Sherry, a pioneer of contemporary music, and Bernard Greenhouse, founding member of the Beaux Arts Trio. She also studied under the “father of all cellists,” Pablo Casals.

Her recital features Bach’s “Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009,” Gaspar Cassadó’s “Suite for cello solo,” Mark O’Connor’s “Appalachia Waltz” and Zoltán Kodály’s “Sonata for solo cello, Op. 8.”


Student Piano Recital Saturday
Pianist Jenna Hamilton performs a recital this Saturday, November 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.


Student Cello Recital Saturday
Todd St. Amand, a senior music performance major, will present a cello recital this Saturday, November 21, at 4:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.


Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Sunday
The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity at ASU, will perform a recital this Sunday, November 22, at 4:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.


Concerto-aria Competition Finalists Sunday
Finalists in the Hayes School of Music concerto-aria competition will perform this Sunday, November 22, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The annual competition identifies the most advanced performers in the Hayes School of Music and gives them the opportunity to gain experience as featured soloists. The winners of the competition will be selected by a panel of judges.

Violist Allen Fitzpatrick will perform the first movement of William Walton’s “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra.” Flutist Katie Grunwald will perform the first movement of “Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra” by Gordon Jacob. Pianist Lindsey Vickers will perform the first movement from Robert Schumann’s “Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54.”

Gian Carlo Menotti’s “Monica’s Waltz” from The Medium and Puccini’s “Un bel di vedremo” from Madame Butterfly will be sung by soprano Katherine M. Edahl. Pianist Aaron D. Ames will perform the allegro from Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Op. 73.”

Violinist Vanessa Chumbley will perform the allegro from Sibeleus’ “Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47.” Maurice Ravel’s “Introduction et Allegro” will be performed by harpist Callie Mitchell.

Piano accompanists for the competition are Christina Hayes, P.J. Heebner, Elizabeth Hill, Rodney Reynerson, Bair Shagdaron and Susan Slingland.


Hayes String Quartet November 23
The Hayes String Quartet will perform Monday, November 23, at 6:15 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The program features Shostakovich’s “String Quartet No. 6 in G Major, Op. 101,” Mendelsohhn’s “String Quartet No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 12” and Frank Bridge’s “Sir Roger de Coverley.”

Quartet members are violinists Danice Desir and Kimberly Zeigler, violist Joanna Pepple and cellist Kimberly Zimmerman. All are graduate students in the music school.

Hayes School of Music faculty members Nancy Bargerstock and Eric Koontz coach the quartet.


Student Composers Concert November 23
The works of student composers in the Hayes School of Music will be performed Monday, November 23, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The composers are students of Dr. Scott Meister, a member of the music faculty at ASU.

The Honors String Quartet will perform Brittany Dunton’s “Crayon Box,” Duncan Boatright’s “Musica Instrumentali,” Nathan Brown’s “Impressions of a Gift” and “Saunter” from Jonathan Carter’s “Three Un-Danceable Dances for String Quartet.”

William Watson’s “Agoraphobic Lapse” will be performed by a brass quintet. Jonathan Carter will perform his piano composition “Songs of the Avian Variety.” Andrew M. O’Keefe’s “In the Olive Grove” for organ and choir will be performed by organist Rodney Ward and a 19-member vocal ensemble.

Also on the program is David Hunt’s “Profane Dances for Brass Quintet.”


Student Organ Recital November 24
Senior music performance major Nathaniel Brickman will present an organ recital on Tuesday, November 24, at 6:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
