High Country Soccer Resumes Capital Campaign for Soccer Complex

The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) recently announced that it is resuming its capital campaign to support the development of the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex (TMSC) at Brookshire Park.
HCSA raised $1.5 million during the initial phase of its campaign in 2007 and 2008 but suspended active solicitation for the remaining $600,000 goal when the economy entered a significant recession.
In 2007, HCSA teamed with Watauga County in a joint venture to develop the soccer complex. The complex was completed in the fall of 2008 through a combination of county funding and loans provided to HCSA by a consortium of four banks—Wachovia, High Country Bank, BB&T and United Community Bank.
ASU joined the joint venture in 2008, providing financial support as well as additional facilities including bleachers, a press box and a fieldhouse, which is currently under construction at the complex.
Chip Williamson is serving as HCSA’s capital campaign chairman.
“There are various indicators that the worst of the recession may be behind us,” Williamson said. “It is time to resume our campaign to ensure that we are in a good financial position to meet out obligations to the financial institutions that were willing to support this venture.”
Darren Mullenix, president of HCSA, commented, “This venture, which now includes the county, ASU and HCSA, has demonstrated the potential from such a partnership. Our greatest challenge now, beyond completing the capital campaign, is to manage the excitement and demand that has been generated since we opened the complex last fall.”
