Want To Go?

Date: Thursday, December 3
Time: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Broyhill Inn, Boone
Cost: Free

Boone Green Drinks is an informal social networking organization that hosts monthly events for anyone interested in “green” activities in the High Country. On Thursday, December 3, Boone Green Drinks will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn in Boone. Free and open to the public, the group allows people to catch up with other locals involved in “green” services and also to make new “green” contacts.

Boone Green Drinks is among 12 other North Carolina communities and 640 cities worldwide that host monthly gatherings of sustainably minded people who meet to informally discuss green business, green services and green activities.

Participants cover their own costs of refreshments, and light snacks are provided. The slogan of the international Green Drinks organization is “Saving the World One Sip at a Time.” Everyone invites someone else along, so the crowd is always different, making Green Drinks a fluid, self-organizing network. These events are simple and unstructured with many positive benefits. Attendees have found jobs, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. Invite your friends and be sure to carpool or ride AppalCART to the Broyhill Inn.

One of the organizers of the event, Quint David of the Watauga County Green Business Plan, said, “This is a great opportunity for people working [in] or interested in different ‘green’ businesses to get together and talk about what they are doing.”

Boone Green Drinks held a few meetings earlier this year, but the group was inactive after one of the key organizers moved away in the spring. This new effort to reorganize is supported by a number of local organizations that already host green committees and support the idea of a broader social network that can serve the entire community.

Brian Crutchfield, current board president of the High Country Business Network, commented, “Our group has not met for the past 12 months, partly due to the economic recession, but we fully support Boone Green Drinks as a way for some of our members to come back together and meet…under the green umbrella and meet some new green friends.”

The Green Committee of the High Country Home Builders Association, the High Country Business Network, MountainKeepers, the Watauga County Green Business Plan and the Blue Ridge Entrepreneurial Council support the group.

Event organizers encourage interested persons to join the Facebook group and attend meetings that will be held on the third Thursday of each month starting in January 2010. At the first reorganizing meeting on December 3, the group will set the schedule for future meetings, topics of informal discussion, location options and sponsorship potential.
