What happens when you combine committed people with passion, drive and skills? Success!
This year, the Community Care Clinic (CCC), located at 141 Health Center Drive in Boone, has grown from an all volunteer group of medical providers and support staff into a locally recognized, grant winning organization now led by two exceptional and talented individuals.
Last March, Rebecca Moore was hired as the first executive director of the CCC in its first paid position. Moore came to the CCC well qualified both in education and experience, having a master of arts from Duke University and extensive additional studies in other areas such as public administration and conflict management. Moore also brought her experience in grant writing and working with the medical community. As a representative of the CCC, Moore has worked hard to raise the profile of the CCC through meetings with community groups and in securing money for the clinic.
With the executive director in place, the CCC found itself in a position to fill the other crucial position of clinic director.
This fall, the CCC hired Marian Peters, PA, PhD, as clinic director. Peters holds a bachelor of science in mathematics and physics from North Carolina Central University. She also holds a PhD in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master of medical science from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Although Peters officially began her new duties as clinic director in November, she was one of the original founders and the driving force behind the development of the CCC. She has been serving in an unpaid capacity as the primary healthcare provider since its inception in 2005.
In addition to the myriad of duties involved in providing direct patient care, Peters serves as the liaison between the clinic and the larger medical community in the local area to facilitate and expand the coordination of services and care for clinic patients.
The seeds for the current CCC were planted back in 2005 when Peters, Dr. Jack Whitlock and other volunteers began to plan for a community clinic that would provide healthcare services for the uninsured in Boone and surrounding areas. Since those early days, the clinic has continued to grow and add services, including free mental health counseling, chiropractic services and acupuncture.
