Lees-McRae Candlelight Christmas Concert December 5 and 6
The Candlelight Christmas Concert has been a tradition at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk for 30 years.
Lees-McRae College Performing Arts will end the fall 2008 season with the annual Candlelight Christmas Concert on Lees-McRae College’s campus in Hayes Auditorium Saturday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 6, at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children and students (any student ID is accepted).
This year’s concert will host students and faculty presentations including solos, duets, piano solos, dance pieces, reader’s theatre and a special appearance by Santa. This annual tradition is appropriate for all ages.
As usual, Hayes Auditorium’s stage will be decked to the nines with several Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, presents, poinsettias and thousands of Christmas lights. The scent of evergreens and great performances will surely rouse the holiday spirit.
The tradition of the Candlelight Christmas Concert began 30 years ago and has continued because of its success and community support. First held in the Pinnacle Room, Performing Arts faculty hung greenery from the rafters with tiny lights strewn throughout. They always had a fire in the fireplace and served gingerbread and spiced tea, just like in Renaissance England.
When the crowds became too large, the concert moved to Hayes Auditorium and the college continues to use live greenery, the cash crop of the High Country. Each year’s concert has seen some changes.
Tickets are only sold at the door. The box office will be open one hour prior to showtime. For more information, click to www.performingarts.lmc.edu or call 828-898-8721.
